WorkOS vs Auth0 for MCP Server Tenant Scoping in Production

A concrete comparison of WorkOS AuthKit and Auth0 Organizations for multi-tenant MCP servers — covering JWT claims, DCR isolation, per-tenant SSO costs, and what actually breaks.

Every comparison you'll find on this topic answers the question "which provider checks the MCP spec boxes." WorkOS supports DCR. Auth0 supports DCR. Both handle enterprise SSO. Both issue OAuth 2.1 tokens. That's the floor — knowing it doesn't help you decide anything in 2026.

The question that actually matters for production is narrower: when you have 30 or 50 enterprise customers each authenticating through their own IdP, what tenant context lands inside the MCP access token, how does your server read it on every tool invocation, and what does this architecture cost per customer per month? None of the current page-one results address this. They're written for teams deciding whether to add auth at all, not for teams trying to figure out which organizational model prevents tenant A's AI agent from touching tenant B's data.

The Actual Problem: Tenant Context in the Token

An MCP server in a multi-tenant B2B product needs to enforce one guarantee on every single tool call: the request came from a principal authorized to act within tenant X, and that authorization cannot bleed into tenant Y. This sounds obvious and it mostly is — until you think through the full flow.

An agent (Claude, Cursor, a custom orchestrator) hits your MCP server and triggers Dynamic Client Registration. DCR is a protocol-level mechanism for the client to announce itself to your authorization server at runtime. The problem: DCR operates at the authorization server level, not at the organization/tenant level. The client_id that comes back from DCR has no inherent tenant binding. It is a global registration.

From that registration, the agent initiates an OAuth authorization flow. This is where tenant context has to enter the picture, and this is where WorkOS and Auth0 diverge structurally.

WorkOS: Organizations as First-Class Citizens

WorkOS is built around Organizations as the primary data model. A user is not just a user — they are a member of one or more Organizations, and Organizations are where SSO connections, roles, and permissions live. This is not a feature added on top of an existing auth system; it is the organizing principle of the entire product.

For MCP, this means the authorization URL you construct must include an organization parameter:

This is the entire isolation model, and it works because WorkOS generates it for you without any custom claims rules or token transformations.

The catch: each SSO connection costs $125/month. Fifty enterprise tenants, each with one SSO connection, is $6,250/month before you touch anything else. This is publicly documented and non-negotiable at the standard tier. It is the most important number in the WorkOS pricing model and it is not prominently featured in any of the comparison posts.

Auth0: Two Architectures, One Choice You Have to Make Early

Auth0 gives you two ways to handle multi-tenancy, and which one you choose has significant downstream implications for MCP.

Option 1: Multiple Auth0 tenants. One Auth0 tenant per enterprise customer. Each customer gets their own Auth0 domain, their own client registrations, their own JWKS endpoint. Complete physical isolation — different databases, different token signing keys, different everything. MCP fits cleanly because there is no cross-tenant bleed possible at the infrastructure level.

The problem: operational complexity scales linearly with customer count. Fifty enterprise customers means maintaining fifty Auth0 tenants — fifty separate configurations, fifty separate SSO setups, fifty separate monitoring surfaces. Most teams that go this route regret it by customer 15. We have not run this at >20 tenants ourselves, but the Reddit thread linked in the SERP and multiple Auth0 community posts describe this exact scaling wall.

Option 2: Auth0 Organizations (single Auth0 tenant). Auth0's Organizations feature lets you model multi-tenancy inside a single Auth0 tenant. Each Organization can have its own IdP connections, its own member roles, its own branding. Tokens include:

The tradeoff is that isolation is logical, not physical — all organizations share the Auth0 infrastructure, and a misconfigured rule or Action can theoretically touch cross-org data. For MCP specifically, the relevant risk is in the claims pipeline: Auth0 uses Rules and Actions to customize tokens, and a bug in a custom Action that injects org-scoped permissions can affect every org simultaneously.

Auth0 Organizations requires the Business plan or higher. As of writing, Auth0 does not publicly list enterprise SSO connection pricing — it requires a sales conversation. Community estimates and direct reports put per-connection costs in the $130–$160/month range, similar to WorkOS at low connection counts.

The DCR + Multi-Tenant Collision

This is the failure mode that none of the comparison posts mention, and it bites teams in production.

When an AI agent uses Dynamic Client Registration against your MCP server, it registers a client_id. That registration does not know about your tenants. If you are using WorkOS, the DCR endpoint is at the AuthKit domain level. If you are using Auth0, it is at the Auth0 application level. Either way, the registered client can theoretically initiate an authorization flow for any organization, not just the one it first authenticated against.

This matters when the same agent tooling (Claude Desktop, say) is used by users from multiple of your enterprise tenants. The agent registers once via DCR, then different users from different organizations use it. If your authorization URL construction does not enforce the correct organization parameter for each user's context, you can end up with a token for the wrong org — or more commonly, a token with no org_id claim at all because the auth flow hit a non-org-scoped path.

The fix is straightforward but not automatic: your MCP server's authorization URL generation must always include the tenant identifier, derived from something trustworthy (the subdomain the agent hit, a URL parameter the user provided, the user's email domain after initial authentication). Do not rely on DCR metadata to carry this. Both WorkOS and Auth0 let you include the organization in the authorization URL — neither enforces this for you.

What Actually Breaks in Production

Org context dropped in tool handler. The JWT has org_id. Your MCP server validates the JWT signature and expiry. But the tool handler doesn't read org_id when constructing the database query. This is not a vendor problem — it is an implementation gap that both WorkOS and Auth0 give you every opportunity to make. Audit every tool handler for explicit org_id scoping before going to production.

Per-org permission granularity mismatch. WorkOS permissions ("permissions": ["data:read"]) are defined at the org level and appear directly in the token. Auth0 permissions require careful role-to-permission mapping per organization. Teams migrating from Auth0 to WorkOS (or the reverse) consistently underestimate how differently permissions surface in the token and how much tool-handler code needs to change.

DCR registration proliferating across test tenants. During development, DCR creates client registrations every time a test runs unless you reuse client_ids. With multi-tenant setups, test clients can pollute the production authorization server's registration table. Both WorkOS and Auth0 let you clean these up via API, but you need to do it.

Audit log gaps at the org boundary. WorkOS gives you org-scoped audit events (user authenticated into org X, token issued for org X) via its API. Auth0 with Organizations gives you audit events, but filtering to a specific org's activity requires querying with org_id as a filter — the log stream does not partition by org by default. Enterprise customers who want to pull their own audit logs (a common requirement for SOC 2 reviews) need this to work cleanly. WorkOS's model makes this easier out of the box.

Which One to Use

If your product is B2B SaaS, Organizations is your primary data model, and you are starting fresh or have fewer than five existing enterprise customers: WorkOS. The Organizations primitive aligns with MCP's per-tenant token scoping without custom claims logic, the integration timeline is fast, and the opinionated model prevents the configuration sprawl Auth0's flexibility invites.

If you are already running Auth0 with existing enterprise customers, existing SSO connections, and existing custom Actions that define your permission model: stay on Auth0 and add Organizations. Migrating customers to a new auth provider to gain cleaner MCP tenant scoping is not worth the disruption unless you have a compelling reason beyond MCP alone.

The unresolved tension neither vendor solves: at scale (100+ enterprise tenants with strict data residency or physical isolation requirements), you will eventually need infrastructure-level separation that logical Organizations cannot provide. Both WorkOS and Auth0 will tell you they handle enterprise. What they mean is they handle the auth layer. The physical tenancy problem — separate databases, separate encryption key hierarchies, data residency in specific regions per customer — is yours to solve. MCP token scoping is a prerequisite for getting there, not a substitute for it.

Does WorkOS support per-organization SAML/OIDC connections for MCP servers?
Yes. Each WorkOS Organization can have its own SSO connection — Okta, Microsoft Entra, Google Workspace, or any SAML/OIDC IdP. The `org_id` and associated connection metadata appear in the issued JWT, which your MCP server reads to enforce tenant isolation in tool handlers.
Can Auth0 Organizations replace having separate Auth0 tenants per enterprise customer?
